Investing €250 in Our Launch Video: Was It Worth It?

Launching a new product or startup often involves strategic decisions about how to position and promote your brand effectively. Recently, I invested €250 into a promotional video for our project, and I want to share the experience and gather insights from the community on whether it was a worthwhile investment.

The Power of Character-Based Marketing

In my professional network, I’ve observed a growing trend among startups: building brands not just around products but around compelling marketing funnels that incorporate distinct characters or mascots. Successful examples, like Duolingo, utilize animated, Pixar-like characters that resonate with audiences and build brand recognition.

This approach has led me to question: Why aren’t more brands leveraging mascots or characters? The potential to create memorable, relatable branding elements seems significant but underutilized.

My Journey into Character Branding

Last month, I participated in a Cursor hackathon, which culminated in winning a $15,000 cash prize. This victory provided the confidence and financial means to transition from my previous role into dedicating myself full-time to this project. As part of our product launch, we produced a promotional video (you can view it in the comments).

Our aim was to create something visually engaging that would generate awareness. Considering the visual nature of the content, I believed a video would be the most effective medium for launch — and I kept costs minimal, spending only €250. My hypothesis was that such visual content could attract more impressions and engagement than traditional advertising, at a fraction of the cost; although, I remain open to feedback on this premise.

Embracing Trends in Branding and Marketing

Our approach is grounded in several emerging trends:

1. The Rise of Character-Based Marketing

Character-driven branding is gaining momentum, demonstrating impressive results across various channels. Duolingo’s success exemplifies how a mascot can effectively humanize a brand and foster customer loyalty. In a landscape where distribution channels are critical, investing in memorable characters could offer a higher ROI on marketing efforts.

2. The AI-First Brand Identity

As AI-powered software proliferates, I believe more companies will begin to associate their brands with distinctive characters. Given that many AI tools and models possess inherent “personality,” connecting these brands with a visual or anthropomorphic identity could enhance recognition and differentiation.

3. Standing Out in an Ocean of Similarity

The market continues to grow rapidly, especially in tech, e-commerce, and digital products. Many entrepreneurs deploy similar tools and models, resulting in a landscape of sameness. Developing a strong, unique brand character can act as a protective moat — helping your startup stand out and build lasting brand equity, even amidst rapidly evolving digital products.

Personal Reflections on Minimalism and Branding

I personally find myself somewhat tired of the prevailing aesthetic of minimalism and utopian futurism in tech branding. While sleek, minimalist designs are prevalent, I believe that more distinctive, character-driven branding could be a refreshing alternative that better captures attention and builds emotional connections.

Final Thoughts

Investing €250 in a launch video centered around a captivating character was a deliberate choice aimed at leveraging visual storytelling and emerging branding trends. While the true impact remains to be seen, I believe that innovative, character-centric marketing holds significant promise, especially in a saturated digital landscape.

I would love to hear your thoughts: Do you think character-based content is a worthwhile marketing strategy? Have you seen similar approaches succeed? And, of course, feedback on our video and approach is most welcome.

Author’s note: In a world obsessed with automation and sameness, creating a distinct brand personality through characters might just be the edge you need.
